2027 Brief: the Seat
Our 2027 edition explores the seat as an open typology: defined by the act of sitting, yet open to every interpretation of what that means.
The seat is one of the most elemental objects in human experience. It can be something for one person or a place for many, something intimate or public, monumental or minimal. A place to rest, to concentrate, to contemplate, to socialise. There is only one requirement, the object must seat at least one person
More than any other object, the seat has evolved in direct dialogue with how we live. Shifting in form, material, and meaning as our bodies, rituals, and social structures have changed around it. To design a seat is to take a position on how a person should occupy space.
We invite this year’s participants to bring their own material practice and process to the typology. There are no wrong interpretations, only the question of what sitting means to you.
